Plastering Fixtures that Create Sensory Gap
In this project, we aimed to create fixtures that not only served as booth designs for showcasing products but also conveyed the core philosophy of the “SAKAN CMF lab,” which explores new possibilities for plastering.
The starting point came from a sample we encountered at Haradasakan Co.,Ltd.’s workshop. Despite its plastered appearance, its Styrofoam base made it surprisingly light—light enough to hold in one hand. We focused on the intriguing gap between its visual impression and physical sensation.
To display products of various sizes, we designed four types of fixtures at different heights rather than using a single large surface. Lower fixtures reveal the overall form of the products, while taller ones bring materials, textures, and details closer to view. Combining them changes the composition from different angles, allowing the products to reveal different qualities from every side of the booth.
The fixtures use two plaster finishes with different thicknesses: a terrazzo-type plaster and Haradasakan Co.,Ltd.’s original trowel-applied finish. Terrazzo requires polishing after application, while the trowel finish undergoes a separate burnishing process. The three-dimensional curved surfaces also required careful shaping of the substrate and precise plastering to leave parts of the Styrofoam intentionally exposed.
Although the design involved multiple interrelated elements, it was brought to fruition thanks to the craftsmen’s outstanding skills. Styrofoam was a material the company routinely used as a substrate. This project was made possible precisely because the company possessed the strength to handle the entire process—from processing to finishing—in-house.
The resulting fixtures express the rich potential of plastering while also demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship and technical expertise behind Haradasakan Co.,Ltd..
感覚のギャップをつくる左官什器
今回の計画では、プロダクトを発表するためのブースデザインに留まらず、新たな左官の可能性を伝える「SAKAN CMF lab」の核となる考え方を伝える什器を目指した。
原田左官工業の作業場を訪れた際、A1サイズほどのサンプルを手にすることがあった。重量感のある見た目とは違い、スタイロフォームを下地としたそのサンプルは片手で持てるほど軽さがとても印象的で、その感覚が生むギャップの面白さに着目したことが、このプロジェクトの出発点である。
大小さまざまなプロダクトを展示するため、什器は大きな一枚の天板ではなく、高さの異なる４種類の什器を組み合わせるデザインとした。低い什器ではプロダクトの全貌を見せ、高い什器ではプロダクトやサンプルの素材感や詳細を見ることができる。それらの什器を組み合わせることで、多方向から見える印象や展示物が代わり、ブースのどの方向からもプロダクトの多面性を魅力的に見せることを考えた。
今回の什器は、テラゾタイプの左官材と、原田左官工業独自のコテ塗りの左官材という、仕上げ厚の異なる２種類の左官材を使用しており、テラゾは骨材を含んだ材を左官したあと、研磨するというプロセスがあり、コテ塗り材では左官後に磨きのプロセスがある。また、什器には3次曲面を取り入れているため下地の加工手間がかかる上、スタイロフォームを露出するため左官の正確な精度が求められた。こうした複数の要素が絡むデザインでありながら、職人の方々の卓越した技術によって実現へと至った。スタイロフォームは同社が日常的に下地材として使用している材料だったため、自社で加工から仕上げまでを一貫して行える強みがあったからこそ可能となった試みである。そうして完成した什器は、左官の豊かな可能性を表現するとともに、原田左官工業が持つ技術力の高さを象徴する本展示の道具の一つとなったと考えている。
